Ernest Winward was the son of Samuel Winward (b.1852) and Emma Mangnall. In 1891 he was living at 27 Grundy Street, Westhoughton. In 1901 he was living at 6 Leigh Common in Westhoughton. In 1911 he was living with his mother and brother James at 8 Gerrard Street, Bolton, and working as a coal miner.
