Mary Ann Bellingall was born in November 1828, in Manchester, and was baptised at Manchester Cathedral on 2nd November. She was the daughter of weaver overlooker turned tobacconist & stationer James Bellingall. In 1841 she was working as a weaver and living at the family shop in Butler Street, Manchester. She married a linen draper called Benjamin Waite (1829) at St. John's church in Manchester in 1847. In 1851 she was living at 18 Rochdale Road, Manchester. Benjamin died from tuberculosis in 1856. She gave birth to John in 1860, but there is no father mentioned on the birth certificate - Benjamin was dead and the father is unknown. Mary was living at 17 Rome Street in 1860 and 1861, and was working as a dressmaker. In 1871 she was working as a mantle maker at 5 Kelly's Buildings in the Ancoats district of Manchester. In 1881 she was still a mantle maker and was still at 5 Kelly's Buildings. She died from chronic cardiac failure at 5 Kelly's Buildings on 18th January 1885. She was aged 58. Her son John was present at the death.
