Barclay Bellingall or Ballingall was born in Edinburgh in 1771 and christened at St. Cuthberts church on 22nd April. He was the son of David Bellingall and Mary Johnstone. He married a woman Ann Brandwood at Manchester Cathedral on 9th December 1793. In 1795 he was listed as a corporal in the 55th Regiment of Foot. In 1802 the 55th sailed for the West Indies, where they garrisoned Jamaica for 10 years, relieved only by an attack on San Domingo. He died in Jamaica on 29th January 1805, aged 33.
