James Ainscough was christened on 21st April 1843 in Wigan. He was the son of William Ainscough (1816) and Fanny Holding. In 1851 he was living at Canal Row in Haigh. In 1861 he was living at Farm House in Blackrod and was working as a coal miner. On 13th June 1863, in St. Katherine’s church, Blackrod, he married Mary Ann Waring, who was the daughter of Margaret Waring, his father's second wife. In 1871 he was working as a collier and was living in Cock Tavern Yard, Blackrod. In 1881 he was still a coal miner and living in Little Scotland, Blackrod. In 1891 he was living at 384 Manchester Road in Blackrod. By 1901 he had retired from coal mining and was living at 278 Atherton Road in Hindley. In 1911 he was retired and living with his daughter Mary and son-in-law Ernest Westhead at 18 Arundel Street, Hindley.
